Another IKD and Semihandmade IKEA Kitchen!

It’s no secret that we LOVE the work done over at Inspired Kitchen Design. Not only does IKD take the hassle out of IKEA’s online design process, but their team of talented designers is great at finding rich details that help realize their clients’ visions.

Case in point, this beautiful new kitchen in upstate New York.

IKD helped the home owners set their kitchen apart from others with two different types of Semihandmade doors. For the cabinets, they used our DIY Slab doors and panels. Our DIY doors unfinished, which gave the home owners complete freedom to find the perfect paint for their design.

IKD got especially creative with the kitchen island. They created a contrasting look using our Reclaimed Barn Lumber doors and paneling that adds an eye-catching, rustic touch to the room. Our real-wood, reclaimed-lumber fronts adds another dynamic texture to an already beautiful design.

We’re so excited with how this project turned out, and we’re happy to add it to the list of beautiful collaborations from IKD and Semihandmade. Check out our Kitchen Design page to find out how you can get a complete online design package from IKD for just $195 and take the next step towards creating your perfect kitchen.

Moving On From Your Ikea Akurum Kitchen System

Real Ikea fans take their love of affordable, modern furniture seriously. From the innovators that conjure pure imagination on IKEAhackers to the sorely missed debates on IKEAFans over that one guy in the Red Hook store, people feel passionately about their Ikea. So, when the yellow-and-blue powers that be decommission your favorite cabinet, it’s OK if you feel a little sad. And when it’s not just any cabinet, but the Akurum—the top-ranked system in JD Power’s Kitchen Cabinet Satisfaction Survey for the last two years—there are going to be a lot of sad homeowners

Semihandmade Ikea Akurum Kitchen

The Akurum kitchen cabinet system may be gone for good, but there’s a reason for celebration because Ikea’s Sektion system is here and it’s even better. We here at Semihandmade love Sektion because it’s even more versatile and intuitive than Ikea’s former system. Sektion has more modular cabinet sizes for greater stackability, integrated drawer lighting, better interior storage fittings, and a hanging rail to make base cabinet installation easier.

Semihandmade Ikea Akurum Kitchen

Here’s the rub: Sektion’s new measurements do not match the old Akurum specifications. The systems do look alike with square boxes, high-quality Blum hinges and drawer slides, and many similar-looking door styles. The key is that the cabinet dimensions are different, which makes everything different. A 30” base cabinet, for example, is now almost a true 30” wide by 30” high (before it 29 15/16” wide by 30 3/8” high), and an 80” pantry is now actually 80” instead of its previous 79 1/2”.

There isn’t an Ikea cabinet that we haven’t fallen in love with here at Semihandmade, which is why we still make custom-fit doors and paneling for both Sektion and Akurum cabinets. So if you’re looking for beautifully crafted real-wood doors for a new Sektion project or a set of new doors and drawers to upgrade an old Akurum system, Semihandmade will always be your top destination for the best-looking doors you can find.

Semihandmade Godmorgon and Kallax Fronts!

At Semihandmade, we’re always looking for amazing new and exciting material choices for our one-of-a-kind IKEA® doors.  It’s part of what makes coming to work every day so fun and rewarding: trying out new things, experimenting, getting our hands dirty while figuring – and sometimes more than we like to admit – screwing things up.

Semihandmade Wine Barrel/Photo Print IKEA Doors

Vanc3Collaborations with innovative companies seen above like Stikwood, Plyboo and 33 Stewart Avenue attest to that.

And as we’ve grown, we’ve expanded from offering just kitchen doors to moving into other parts of the house.  That includes bathroom, closets and media cabinets.

Two cabinets we’re particularly excited to be making doors for are IKEA’s Godmorgon and Kallax cabinets.

Godmorgon, made for single- and double-sink configurations, can either float or have decorative legs in front (like our hairpin legs sold here).  We’ve even had a few particularly creative past clients use it as a dresser!

OrangeGMBest of all, we’ve got a 10% OFF SALE on all Godmorgon fronts ’til May 17!

Kallax has been a staple at IKEA for years, is huge with DJs and record collectors due to its 13″ openings, and was formerly called “Expedit.”

Dwell on Design 2014

Here’s a nice video re-cap of our Semihandmade IKEA Doors from this past June’s Dwell on Design show in Los Angeles.  This was our sixth year at the nation’s largest design event, and we couldn’t be happier with the results.

Semihandmade Plyboo Linear DoorsAbove is shot of our Plyboo Linear Line for IKEA cabinets that debuted at DOD.  Already featured in the LA Times, these one-of-a-kind doors were a huge hit and we are excited to launch them formally this Fall.  For more information on Smith and Fong’s amazing bamboo products, and for more Plyboo options to choose from for your IKEA project – kitchen, bathroom, closet or media cabinet – please click here.

Semihandmade, Meet Duluth

We’re fortunate to ship a lot of doors for IKEA™ kitchens and bathrooms every week, but it’s hard to get a sense of how a finished project turns out.  That’s why it’s always exciting to get photos back; this Semihandmade Flatsawn Walnut IKEA™ kitchen in Duluth, MN is no exception!  Special thanks to Susan Maguire for the amazing shots.

Nothing quite shows off the wood’s natural beauty like running the grain horizontally (just check out that the pantry wall by the fridge!).  You’ll also notice the open bookcase, which is just one of the many custom options we offer – think wine cabinets and floating shelves – to make your dream project even more one-of-a-kind.  The white Abstrakt doors and drawer fronts from IKEA™ scattered throughout frame the room nicely and also soften the walnut’s brown tones.  Lastly, it’s hard to miss the pop of those orange barstools – they’re from our friends at Loll Designs, the folks that make just about everything from 100% recycled milk bottles.  We’re long-time fans of their work, so it’s fun to finally see our two worlds collide.  It’s also worth nothing that like everything else from Loll, the stools are not only easy on the eyes, they’re pretty much indestructible (kind of important if you notice all that white stuff out on the deck!).  For more information on this project, please visit our Houzz page.

Design Sponge At ICFF 2014

We are long-time fans of Grace and everyone at Design Sponge, so it was a thrill to find our reclaimed barn lumber IKEA™ Godmorgon fronts included in this week’s featured designs from their visit to ICFF in New York last week.  What a year it has been since winning the Editor’s Award for Best Kitchen/Bath there last year!
